Welcome to Cafe OPAL, a charming gem nestled in the serene streets of Kyoto’s Higashiyama Ward. This delightful café offers not only a respite from the bustling city but also a warm, welcoming atmosphere that feels like home. The owners, a passionate couple, have cultivated an environment where every detail speaks to their love for coffee and community.

As soon as you step through the door, the comforting aroma of freshly brewed coffee envelops you, promising a satisfying experience. Each cup is meticulously crafted; the coffee beans are roasted only when ordered, ensuring that every sip bursts with flavor. This is not your typical café—here, you’ll discover a devotion to quality that transforms your coffee break into a special occasion.

Cafe OPAL is more than just coffee. Customers rave about the delicious desserts that pair perfectly with their drinks, alongside an array of delectable sandwiches that underscore the quality of the ingredients. A highlight for many is the iced latte, touted by Briana Garcia-Cuevas as the best she’s ever had—perfectly chilled and rich with flavor, it’s a must-try for afternoons spent exploring the city.

It’s easy to see why Emma Jackson describes it as “a wonderful family-owned cafe tucked away down a quiet street.” The intimate setting is enhanced by the soothing sounds of jazz music that play softly in the background, inviting you to linger a little longer. Whether you’re looking to unwind after a day of sightseeing or are searching for a cozy corner to enjoy your book, Cafe OPAL caters to all.

Don’t just take our word for it; as David Carns states, it’s an accidental find that turns your coffee break into a delightful experience—one that both adults and children can enjoy together. Violet Mon found solace here after a busy day, underlining the café’s ability to provide a lovely escape from the crowds. It’s a place where the owner’s kindness shines through, making every guest feel special and appreciated.

So, the next time you wander the wooded pathways and historical temples of Kyoto, make sure to include a stop at Cafe OPAL in your itinerary. Not only will you enjoy exquisite coffee and delightful treats, but you’ll also experience the warmth and charm of a cafe that feels like a part of the family. We can guarantee that your journey through Kyoto will be incomplete without a moment spent in this lovely oasis.

We found this place casually, to take a coffee after a long walk in crowded Kyoto. The owner is such a nice lady, the coffee is amazing and so is the food like sandwiches and cakes. Lovely!

Best little cafe! Coffee is delicious and the atmosphere is comforting, relaxed and effortlessly cool. Quality of coffee: Each coffee is made to order - with the beans roasted only when ordered. The owners love their coffee. This is not Starbucks. Found this gem in a rainy winter's day. Quiet street, down a green leafy lane, with a heater and hot kettle at the entry to invite you as the owners greet you from the kitchen. The owner and staff are kind and warm. Good energy. I had a hot cheese and ham toastie with mustard, roasted black coffee - hand poured. The coffee (with beans roasted per order) was incredibly rich and flavourful. Price comparable with the bigger chains, but coffee was much better. Hot ham and cheese toastie hit the spot - delicious. Loved the interior - extensive music collection, cosy, clean decor. Full of character but not stuffy. Classical music plays on the speakers. Manga, books and art on the shelves. It has a cool Kissaten style that reminds me of 50's Paris and 60's New York. Velvet, wallpaper, rich jewel colours, little sitting nooks that beckon. It was hard for me to choose a spot to sit down because they all look so comfy and welcoming! Whether you're solo or in a group, this is a haven to rest. Read, write, chat. Books, music, coffee and vibe. Artistic nature all around. Each menu has individual paper-cut art cover! So much care and love has gone into this place. Cafe Opal was established in 1998, and the house is 100 years old. I especially love that this is owner-operated and not part of a big chain/ franchise. Owners are the best. In speaking to them, they said they made this place for people to be creative. Please find this treasure, support the locally owned business, and enjoy the charm of Cafe Opal.

Such a great accidental find. After walking the hills and looking at gorgeous temples all morning, this restaurant provided a great chance to rest, enjoy some lovely jazz music (recorded), eat some tasty food, and enjoy good beverages. The kids liked it, too.

Found this place by chance walking back from the temples. The owners are so amazing and this place is one of a kind. Sugsr syrup is homemade and it made for the best latte I've ever had. Must come here if you're in town!

Super cute atmosphere! Espresso was delicious. There was also a delicious gluten free and dairy free cocoa banana cake for those that have dietary requirements…and it was delicious!

Very beautiful set up inside, retro/vintage style. Some old school 90s music and snacks and beer and cakes.
